New South Wales

Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales is where much of the country’s action takes place. Its home to our most famous beach in Bondi, our most famous landmark in the Opera House and our most famous citizens in Cate Blanchett, Geoffry Rush and Baz Luhrmann.

Of course, all of these famed New South Wales icons are condensed into the state’s capital Sydney, a city that enjoys both a big city and beach-side lifestyle - not to mention those million-dollar harbour views.

To think Sydney is the only spot worth visiting in New South Wales is to seriously underestimate the blue state. Away from the city limits, New South Wales is a diverse and stunning region where you can take your pick from skiing to wine country, sublime beaches, stunning islands and numerous cute and quaint country towns.

While there’s plenty to choose from, some standout spots include the coastal town of Byron Bay, Yamba, South West Rocks, Broken Hill and Lord Howe Island. The Hunter Valley is another popular spot, with the area’s vineyards proving the perfect spot for a weekend escape complete with guesthouses, gold courses and a glass of Shiraz.

But if it’s a long weekend of adventure you seek then the Blue Mountains and Snowy Mountains are always on hand. Granted, a glass of wine is never too far away. In addition to the luxury dining and indulgent spas, skiing and hiking are what really shines here. The Blue Mountains, the wondrous Jenolan Caves are considered the ‘must do,’ while in the Snowy Mountains, the best spots to ski are at Thredbo and Mount Perisher.
